Subscribing to RSS/atom feeds

Posted by deneb7 on April 27, 2008

I’ve added new subscriptions links in the top left menu — it has some extra features in comparison to the old links.

For example, the old links were only RSS – the new links are more compatible and will be in whatever format your feed reader application requires. There are also extra links to the feed that you may find useful.

Also, the feed cuts my entries so that you don’t have to see the entire post unless you want to. I’m not sure if I really want this feature yet — I’d appreciate feedback on that (aka. should I show more/less of the entry, or don’t cut at all, etc).

Brief summary of feeds (because I’ve been asked)

If you are interested in reading several blogs at once, feeds allow you to subscribe to blogs so you don’t have to check each blog every day for new entries. You can simply hit refresh on your reader, and it will check for you (highlighting the blogs that have new entries).

So first, you’ll need to choose a feed reader. There are several types — personally, I find the firefox add-on, Sage to be really handy (it gives you a side menu in firefox so you can still look at other stuff while it’s refreshing). Here’s a list of readers, courtesy of wikipedia.

Once you’ve chosen a reader, click on the subscribe link in my menu. You will come to a page which asks you what reader you use (located at the top right corner). There’s icons for different readers and a drop down box to choose from.

Just click on the icon or choose the reader you use (it will then take you to your reader so you can add it). For Sage, all you need to do is bookmark that page (and put it under the Sage folder).

That’s it! Now you can subscribe and stay updated on your favorite blogs. :)

Cut feeds are annoying. :P It’s an extra click.

Haha ok I’ve gotten rid of that feature for now until someone else says otherwise
